Dr. Oz and Oprah endorsed Resveratrol on the Oprah Winfrey Show Tuesday, March 24th. The Resveratrol Anti-Aging Diet was created by Dr. Oz. This young doctor has found a way to reverse the effects of aging and promote a longer life with the antioxidant, resveratrol, that is found in red wine. On the show, Dr. Oz talks to Oprah about how the food we eat can either damage or nurture our bodies. Resveratrol, which is found in the dark skins of the grapes that red wine is made out of, is a food that nurtures our bodies and promotes long healthy lives. Back in 1991, you may remember, a study came out that red wine is healthy for the heart and can help you live longer. From within the red wine, it’s actually the resveratrol that helps prevent cancer and coronary heart disease, thus allowing you to live longer.

In 1991 60 minutes first reported on “the french paradox,” which is the observation that the French - despite a higher fat and wine intake than Americans - they suffered from a remarkably lower rate of heart disease. Now scientists have discovered something in red wine called resveratrol which can also, in very high concentrations, actually help people live longer by greatly reducing the risk of a number of age related illnesses.

Grape skins contain resveratrol.  Because of the processing, grape juice provides little resveratrol.  Red wine is the best source of resveratrol since white wine has ten times as less resveratrol.  ResV has extracted the pure resveratrol out of the red wine that is responsible for healthy hearts and longer lives.

Different Red Wines Have Different Levels of Resveratrol

For a few years now resveratrol has been in the news as a “super antioxidant” with enormous health advantages derived mainly from red wine, the media hook. Not all red wines are created equal and so not all have the same concentration of resveratrol and thus may not act in the same healthful ways. New research has been conducted on a variety of indiscriminately selected red wines to resolve the issue of resveratrol concentration.

A natural antioxidant, resveratrol is derived from different fruits such as grapes and pomegranates and also in peanuts and other foods grown from plants. Resveratrol and grape skins means it is found in red wine due mainly to the wine making process. Resveratrol has been shown to increase ones defenses against a wide range of diseases and ailments most notably Parkinson’s disease, forms of cancers, cardio vascular illness and it has been widely publicized of late as having anti aging properties.

This anti-cancer element to resveratrol has peaked the curiosity of the scientific community resulting in numerous studies. Even with all the healthful data being produced from research no one has yet methodically or analytically tested its concentrations specifically in red wine. This has meant there is a natural assumption that if you drink one variety of red wine you will gain the same benefits as any other bottle of wine in the rack.
These folks would be wrong. There are most certainly diverse concentrations of resveratrol in various red wines. Researchers are using the latest technology, notably the High Performance Chromatography or HPLC as well as Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry or LCMS, which divide and assemble the ingredients which exist in red wines.

Weightloss experts have talked a lot about the “French paradox.”  The French dine on some of the richest foods in the world, yet the population as a whole is slim.  The French paradox also explains why the French suffer a relatively low incidence of coronary heart disease, despite having a diet rich in saturated fats.  In 2008 it was found that high doses of resveratrol (a constituent of red wine) mimicked some of the benefits of caloric restriction (including reduced effects of aging) in a mice study.

According to FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) data the average French person consumed 108 grams per day of fat from animal sources in 2002 while the average American consumed only 72.  The French eat four times as much butter, 60 percent more cheese and nearly three times as much pork.  The French consume only slightly more total fat (171 g/d vs 157 g/d), but they consume much more saturated fat because Americans consume a much larger proportion of fat in the form of vegetable oil, with most of that being soybean oil.  However, according to the British Heart Foundation in 1999 death rates from coronary heart disease among males aged 35–74 years was 115 per 100,000 people in the US but only 83 per 100,000 in France.

If you don’t want the alcohol, Dr. Oz says you can get some resveratrol from Concord grape juice or other dark grape juices, but you won’t get as much benefit as you would from red wine. “Eighty percent of the benefit of the wine is actually the alcohol, and 20 percent is the resveratrol,” Dr. Oz says. “So it’s the combination that makes red wine so valuable.”

Since resveratrol is being called the ‘fountain of youth’ it’s no surprise that when you look at the scientific research findings that have been done so far resveratrol has shown to be a powerful antioxidant.  This is one of the main reasons it’s said to provide such powerful heart-protective bennefits.  With in the heart resveratrol protects against platelet aggregation, which can lead to the blood forming clots in narrow coronary arteries.
